APPLIED
WORKPLACE ERGONOMICS
The
effectiveness of work can be improved, it can be measured and
the product can be made less expensive. But the conditions under
which the person is working must also be considered. The discipline
which looks at this is ergonomics.
On
its 9th lecture series, PIIE held a seminar on "APPLIED WORKPLACE
ERGONOMICS" as part of its commitment to promote Operational
Excellence. This was held in Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Makati
City on November 21, 2003. This one-day intensive seminar reflected
the multidisciplinary nature of ergonomics and was designed
for health care professionals, engineers, safety specialists,
industrial hygienists, human resource managers or anyone interested
to promote workplace effectiveness.
The
course began with the basic building blocks of the science and
application of ergonomics in today's work environment and culminated
with hands-on application of job design and evaluation methods
including Ergonomic checklists, Strain Index and NIOSH recommended
analysis techniques. Participants learned to recognize risk
factors associated with musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs), and
potential sprain/strain injuries as familiarized themselves
with the body areas affected. Participants exposed to the use
of current evaluation/quantification tools to make accurate
assessments of environmental conditions and were made aware
of common engineering and administrative controls and how they
can be implemented. The course represented a balanced between
lecture and practical hands-on evaluation of workplace tasks.
Conducting
the Seminar was DR. AURA C. MATIAS, an Associate Professor and
Chair of Industrial Engineering and Operations Research, College
of Engineering, University of the Philippines. She received
her Doctor of Philosophy degree in Industrial Engineering (Human
Factors) from Purdue University.
Dr.
Matias is a recognized contributor to the field, and is a renown
author and speaker whose works include peer reviewed articles,
book chapters, training materials, technical reports, industry
and conference presentations. She is also the co-founder and
president of Philippine Ergonomic Society and charter member
of PIIE and leads the working committee of the IE Certification
Program. She is also the chairperson of the PIIE Student Affairs
Committee.
