Research Conference
PIIE
holds successful Research Conference
"You
are only bound by your creativity and imagination." With these
parting words, Dr. Kin Keung Lai, President of Asia Pacific Industrial
Engineering and Management Society (APIEMS) concluded in the closing
remarks of the successful First Research Conference of the Philippine
Institute of Industrial Engineers (PIIE). Attended by 150 international
and local delegates, coming mostly from the academe and local
chapters of the PIIE, the Research Conference, held on October
16-18, 2003, consisted of one and a half days of talks and presentations
on relevant Industrial Engineering topics, including poster presentations,
and a plant visit to EDS Manufacturing Corporation (Yazaki EMI).
A
historic signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation between PIIE
and the Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineering took place,
with PIIE President Elpidio Carlota and CIIE President Dr. Tsong-Ming
Lin, doing the signing. Dr Lin was accompanied by the Secretary
General of CIIE, Dr. Bob Neng-Shu Yang, and the Deputy Secretary
General, Cr. Chun-Wei Remen Lin. Further discussions outside of
the Conference among the international participants have led to
the Manila Declaration, an agreement towards IE Certification
in the region.
Highlights
of the Conference included a talk by medical doctor-economist-IE
practitioner Dr. Benjamin S. Yabut, who is the Program Director
for the Manufacturing Group of the Institute for Industrial Engineers.
Dr. Yabut spoke about technology deployment in a healthcare institution,
and the application of various techniques. Dr. Kin Keung Lai gave
a more expanded talk on the use of Operations Research in the
airline industry, relying on his consulting experience with Hong
Kong's flag carrier. Mr. Anthony Chiu delivered a speech on Sustainable
Consumption and Production, in lieu of Mr. Niclas Svenningsen,
UNEP Industry Officer who could not attend due to a sudden death
in the family. Dr. Carlito Puno, Commissioner of CHED, gave a
stirring and inspiring talk on the pursuit of research and pointed
out educational cooperation tie-ups between universities in the
Central Luzon region and South Korea. Undersecretary Fortunato
de la Pena of DOST pointed out in his concluding message the various
interesting directions for engineering research and initiatives
in the country. The emphasis on research was seen in the talk
on Research Methodology delivered by Dr. Jose Mutuc of De La Salle
University. The parallel sessions on the second day of the Conference
were well-attended and well-received, evoking interested queries
and remarks from the audience. At the end of the Conference, Anthony
Chiu announced to everyone to look forward to the next milestone:
the PIIE Journal.
