The recent spate of scandals and court cases has exposed the vulnerability of organizations to veer away from their original corporate objectives. The vital importance of corporate governance to organizations around the world has become more critical in the light of the world-wide economy. There has been heightened interest in the field with the explosion of research activities and analytical studies brought to bear on the subject. Companies are called upon to strengthen the need for corporate accountability, integrity and transparency. On the occasion of the 23rd PIIE General Membership held in Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Makati City on July 16, 2004 , Ms. Magdalena (Dedeng) Mendoza presented her paper on "Corporate Governance." An Industrial Engineer and a Vice President of the Development Academy of the Philippines , Ms. Mendoza explained how this area has influenced recent events and how the new Business standards are being formulated in order to ensure sustainable success for Corporate entities.
Mr. Federico C. Gonzalez (Dickie), the PIIE's founding President also gave a Presentation on “Planning for Contingencies”, a module which he has developed specifically geared for Philippine organizations. This essentially covered the spectrum of “unforeseen” events and natural calamities and the impact these unpredictable conditions have on the success of organizations. He provided a planning framework for dealing with this area and the role of a Corporate Recovery program.
